THAT ROCK WAS CHRIST

Exodus 17:6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink." So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. (NIV)

In yesterday's article we learnt how that Moses struck the rock twice instead of speaking to it as the Lord had instructed him. Water came out, he got the result. But that result could not justify his disobedience nor rid him of the consequence. One thing was significant about that rock, that Rock was Christ.

Christ was to be struck once (killed once). And after that we only need to speak or confess the blessings, salvation and glory of His resurrected life and walk in it.

God first asked Moses to strike the rock, Exodus 17:6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink." So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.
And water came out.

Later on in Numbers 20:8 God told him to speak to the rock. He didn't have to strike it again.
Numbers 20:8 "Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink."

But Moses struck the rock again, even twice. And He shouldn't have. He did not know that what God asked him to do had implication for eternal salvation. You don't have to know the implication before obeying God's Word.
Numbers 20:10-11 He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, "Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?" Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

And the Bible says and that rock was Christ. Christ was to die once and after that salvation for all. But Moses wanted to kill Him twice.
1 Corinthians 10:4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

Take spiritual instruction seriously. Take God's Word seriously. God doesn't have to explain to you the spirituality and implications behind His instructions. Your role is to obey in details and follow the exact pattern He shows you.

CONFESSION

I am yielded to God's Word always, my heart inclines to His voice. I may not understand fully the implications of God's instructions but I do it all the same, knowing that His Word, precept and instructions are always true and that they are my life. Amen.
