RESULT DOESN'T JUSTIFY DISOBEDIENCE
Numbers 20:8 "Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink." (NIV)
Some people after disobeying authority, even spiritual authority and do things their own way would try to defend their disobedience with the results they got. Result doesn't justify disobedience. If God allowed it to work it is because of His Name and the disobedience may definitely attract consequence. That was the case with Moses.
Moses couldn't complete his mission to bring the Israelites into the promised land for his disobedience. God told him to speak to the rock and water would come out. Instead he struck the rock, disobeying God's express instruction yet water came out and the people and their livestock drank. To Moses everything was alright because water came out but to God everything went wrong for Moses.
Moses in anger struck the rock instead of speaking to it.
Numbers 20:10-11 He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, "Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?" Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.
Partial obedience is disobedience. God said take your staff go to the rock and speak to it. He took his staff and went to the rock but struck it twice. His obedience was not complete though he got result. Why did God cause water to come out even though Moses disobeyed? It is to honour His Name. He had told Moses to gather the assembly and bring water out of the rock for them. If when the people had gathered and water didn't come out they would have spoken against the Lord as they already did many times before then. God caused water to come out for the sake of His Name. If you disobeyed God's word and yet got results, He allowed it to honour His Name. And that doesn't mean the result has justified your disobedience. You would still face the consequences.
In Numbers 20:12, But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them."
Moses and Aaron couldn't bring the Israelites into the promised land because of this very act of disobedience. When God gives you instruction pay attention to details. Every detail in God's Word has spiritual significance. Never justify your disobedience of God's Word by results.
PRAYER
Precious Father, I give more careful attention to your Word and instructions to do exactly. I hear your Word to do, and I refuse to let the surrounding circumstances impact my obedience to your Word, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
