A LITTLE PATIENCE

1 Samuel 13:8-9 He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter. So he said, "Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings." And Saul offered up the burnt offering. (NIV)

We can draw a great lesson from this account of Saul. Saul was waiting for Samuel the Prophet and Priest of God, who would offer the required offerings on behalf of the King Saul and his men. But when Samuel was yet to come and Saul's men began to scatter he offered up the offerings which was unlawful for him to do. He was not patient enough to wait for Samuel the Prophet.

Doing the wrong thing because things were going wrong is not enough to justify the wrong done.
1 Samuel 13:6-7 When the Israelites saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns. Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear.

The Israelites were under great pressure because their enemies had hedged them in, and were fast approaching to attack them, their army was hard pressed, and the troops with king Saul were quaking with fear. Saul out of fear offered up the burnt offering and fellowship offerings, something he shouldn't have done. As soon as he finished Samuel Prophet came in. Just a little patience would have saved his throne.

1 Samuel 13:10-12 Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him. "What have you done?" asked Samuel. Saul replied, "When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash, I thought, ’Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the LORD’s favor.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering."

Samuel's response was strict and straight.
1 Samuel 13:13 "You have done a foolish thing," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.

That was what cost king Saul the kingdom. A little patience would have made all the difference. It's important that we exercise patience in our lives. At times it's just a little more patience.

It's true that no one likes delay. But at times we find ourselves in a situation where waiting is inevitable. And learning to be patient during such time makes all the difference. You could destroy a whole lot with impatient, and just a little patience could make a whole lot of difference.
Deliberately culture yourself to be patient; just a little patience could make a whole lot of difference.

PRAYER

Dear Lord I refuse and reject impatience. I wait when I should and how I should. I wait with the right attitude, I exercise a little patience rather than doing things or acting wrongly. In the face of pressure I maintain my cool, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
