FORGIVENESS IS A MUST
Colossians 3:13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. (NIV)
There are people who refuse to forgive when offended. They repeatedly talk about the harm done to them, and harbour grudges against the fellows. But according to the Bible forgiveness is a must. You must forgive those who offend or hurt you. It is compulsory.
Our theme scripture says "forgive as the Lord forgave you." He forgave us unconditionally; He absorb us of our sins. We should do the same to others. True forgiveness is absorbing or blotting out the wrong done and its consequences. Hence, when we forgive we should also forget about the wrong done to us.
If we say we forgive and yet hold the wrongs against the person we haven't forgiven. That's not how the Lord Jesus forgave us. When He forgave us He blotted out our sins out of existence as though they were never committed and does not remember them anymore. Hebrews 10:17-18 Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more." And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
Peter once asked the Master if forgiving someone for seven times is enough, then if he offends you after that you can fight back. Let's hear the Master's reply.
Matthew 18:21-22 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. (NKJV)
Think about that! 70x7 is 490. You have to forgive someone up to 490 times. You would be a wicked person to count up to that number.
You see, forgiveness is a must. It is compulsory. It doesn't matter what people do against you forgive them.
You might say there are things too difficult to forgive. But Jesus forgave those who crucified Him even while in the pains which they inflicted on Him and heading to death. Someone would say that's Jesus. Stephen did the same. He forgave those who stoned him to death. Acts 7:59-60 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep.
Forgive those who offend or hurt you. Forgiveness is a must.
PRAYER
Thank You Father for forgiving me all my sins. Through your forgiveness which I have received I forgive those who wrong me and hold nothing against them, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
