SPIRITUAL EXERCISE
1 Timothy 4:7-8 Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives' tales. Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next. (NLT)
We engage our body in physical exercises by walking, running, jumping, swimming etc but not many of us give time to spiritual exercise. Yet it is of utmost importance.
Physical exercise makes one physically fit, without which there is no other way to get fit physically. In the same way spiritual exercise makes one spiritual fit, without which there is no other way to get fit spiritually.
Man is a spirit and lives in a body. Physical exercise is for the body, spiritual exercise is for the spirit. You exercise your spirit unto Godly expression. If your spirit is not exercised or trained you cannot express the virtues of God and cannot do much work for the Kingdom.
A simple way to understand this; if you are not physically fit there are things you cannot do even though you wish to do them, even so spiritually.
Get fit spiritually. Getting fit spiritually involves two main exercises; exercise in the Word and exercise in the Spirit. How much you put in is how much you take out. How much time you spend doing these two will equal the results it will produce for you.
Exercising by the Word primarily involves studying and meditating on the Word. Exercising by the Spirit means praying; especially praying in tongues. Doing these regularly will keep you spiritually fit.
Another important aspect of spiritual exercise is testing how fit you are. You do that by putting the Word and the Spirit's power to work. Those who only exercise in the Word and Spirit without putting it to work never really get strong.
You get strong by testing your spiritual fitness; by putting God's Word and Spirit's power to work in your life.
CONFESSION
Through my spiritual exercise in the Word and the Spirit I keep myself spiritual fit and ready to do those good works which God prepared in advance for me to do, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
