DON'T ALLOW GREEDINESS IN YOUR HEART
2 Kings 5:16 The prophet answered, "As surely as the LORD lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing." And even though Naaman urged him, he refused. (NIV)
The account of Naaman being healed of leprosy by Elisha the man of God and how that his servant Gehazi got Naaman's leprosy for his greediness has lot of lessons to teach us.
Naaman the commander of the Army of the king of Aram became leprous, in search for cure he was referred to Elisha the man of God who gave him instruction which he heeded and got healed. Naaman brought gifts to Elisha in appreciation for healing him but the man of God refused the gifts even though Naaman had pleaded with him. The man of God blessed him and he left. But the greedy Gehazi the servant of Elisha wouldn't let the gifts go.
Gehazi ran after Naaman, told him a lie and got some gifts for himself. Little did he know that his greed which got him Naaman's gifts had also gotten him Naaman's leprosy.
2 Kings 5:20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, "My master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him."
He got something from Naaman including his leprosy.
2 Kings 5:22-23 "Everything is all right," Gehazi answered. "My master sent me to say, ’Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’" "By all means, take two talents," said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi.
When Gehazi got back to his master, Elisha. The man of God questioned, he answered that everything was alright.
2 Kings 5:26-27 But Elisha said to him, "Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take money or to accept clothes —or olive groves and vineyards, or flocks and herds, or male and female slaves? Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and to your descendants forever." Then Gehazi went from Elisha’s presence and his skin was leprous —it had become as white as snow.
That's the reward for greed. Never allow greediness into your heart, it kills. Where was Gehazi's conscience all along? His conscience was be-clouded by greed. Don't try to take things that are not given to you. Don't let the good things you cannot afford enter your eyes. Don't nurture appetite for what you cannot pay for. Anything you get in a greedy and deceitful way will eventually cost you so much.
Watch greed!
CONFESSION
Precious Father you have graciously given me all things to enjoy, I refuse to be greedy for anything. I delight in and enjoy the things I am able to bring forth yet, while I work on bringing forth more, in Jesus' Name. Amen!
