CHAPTER 1

CHARACTERS OF JEZEBEL

SHE WAS NOT A JEW

1 Kings 16:30-31 Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him. He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him.

Jezebel was the Daughter of the King of Sidon. Ahab the King Israel took her to be his wife even though God had said to the Israelites not to inter-marry with non-Israelites. She came to Ahab with her customs, traditions and idols. She came among the Lord's people with all the practices of the land of Sidon. She brought their god baal to the land of Israel. 

Being a Queen she had authority and influence, and not just that she was a Princess of Sidon. She was raised to dominate and lead. She never really learnt how to follow but only to be followed. 

She refused to follow the laws and practices the Lord laid down for His people Israel through Moses. Rather she influenced and dominated the land to follow her worship of baal. She had her husband King Ahab under perfect control. She had great influence over him.

Jezebel a Sidonian, the people the Lord asked the Israelites to drive out completely from the land and take possession it, now dominates the land. In the agenda of God for the Israelites Jezebel was not supposed to be among them, yet she became their ruler. 

When the people of God do not follow the word of God the enemy could take over and rule over God's people even though it's against God's will. 

SHE WAS A MURDERER

1 Kings 18:4 While Jezebel was killing off the LORD’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)

The Lord had said to His people the Israelites to destroy the gods of the land He brought them in to take possession of, and to rid the land of their worshipers. Jezebel was among those who should be rid of the land as a worshiper of idol. But on the contrary she came to power in Israel and did to the Lord's people what the Lord had asked to be done to other people and their gods. 

She was repulsive to the worship of Jehovah and began killing the Prophets of God. She was determined to rid the land of God's people and the worship of Jehovah. She succeeded in killing many prophets of God but Obadiah hid some of them. 

RAISED UP A GROUP OF EVIL PEOPLE

1 Kings 18:19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table."

Jezebel had a group of false prophets that she set up to fill the land with idolatry. She often held a feast for them, and ate and drank with them. 

They were her gang among the Lord's people to destroy the Lord's people. They were community of evildoers, they were her idolatry team. With them she desecrated the land of Israel with idolatry.

Some of these false prophets were originally God's prophets but she won them over to evil. She could not win Elijah over. And he became her sworn enemy, a thorn on her flesh.
