THE CITY OF GOD

Hebrews 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, (NIV)

In the Bible Zion refers to the city or people of God. In the days of Moses the people of God often gathered before the Lord at the foot of a mountain. The gathering of God's people in the new testament is mount Zion whether or not there is a mountain.

Referring to the new testament believers the Bible says "you have come to Mount Zion, the City of the living God." The mountain referred in our theme scripture is the church, and the same is the city of the living God. The church on earth is a branch of the heavenly city of the living God. And someday soon we shall go up to that city in heaven. And beautifully at the renewal of all things that city shall be brought down to the new earth and we shall inhabit it.

Revelation 21:2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

While we wait for the Holy City, the new Jerusalem to be brought down out of heaven we can live in its branch (the church) here on earth.
Hebrews 11:16 Instead, they were longing for a better country —a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

It's amazing that this city was prepared and built by God. Every house and city is built by someone, and God is the builder of this city. How glorious is this city!
Hebrews 11:10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

We all should look forward to that city with eternal foundations, whose architect and builder is God. Who wouldn't want to live there?

Let us read what John the Apostle tells us about the city. Revelation 21:22-23 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.

Think about that for a moment! The Lord Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. Imagine you say "I am going to the temple to worship", and God Himself is that temple.
Imagine a brightness that is not by the sun or moon! Imagine the glory of God and the Lamb being the light of the city. Who wouldn't want to live in this city. This is the city of the living God.

When you look at the beautiful cities in the world built by men, how glorious would be the beauty and glory of the city whose architect and builder is God.

PRAYER

Precious Father thank You that you are not shamed to be called our God, and have prepared a city for us. Thank You for being the temple and the light of the city. We keep living in its branch here on earth while we look forward to the heavenly one, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
