GRACE IN PLACE OF GRACE

John 1:16-17 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (NIV)

God's idea from the beginning has been that man live by His Grace. That is, man shouldn't live by his own effort, wisdom and faith rather in the already-made blessings of God. When He created Adam He put everything in perfect condition in the garden of Eden and brought Adam in and asked him to take care of them, and to eat and enjoy whatever he wanted with one exception (the fruit of the tree in the midst of the garden).

He chose Abraham and made his descendant into a nation. He gave His Word (the law) which separated them from the rest of the nations under heaven. That separation was a statement of Grace. With that they enjoyed God's grace, blessings and favour which no other nation had access to. The Israelites were the only one to receive God's grace as a nation until the church. When the church grace came it replaced that grace that was already given.

And John tells us in John 1:16-17, Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

We have received the highest grace. The grace of the law came through Moses but we have received the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ which surpassed and replaced it. We are a people of grace. God's idea and dream is that we function in grace and with grace. What does that mean? It means we are a people who function or live by His finished work.

A Christian would struggle if he fails to recognize grace (finished work) and apply it in his life. Our primary responsibility is to live by His finished work. Anything outside this is setting grace aside which leads to fruitlessness.
Galatians 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"

CONFESSION

I do not set aside the grace of my Lord Jesus Christ for righteousness does not come by the law nor does blessings. Out of His fullness I have received grace immeasurably and I live by grace and truth, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
